This historic ranch in Carmel Valley will become home to a young family seeking a country retreat for remote work and to raise their children. The home will be located on a gentle ridge with 360-degree views of the Pacific, the southern Santa Lucias, and the inland plains of Salinas Valley. We tried to create a sense of shelter on this exposed knoll by lowering a good portion of the home into the hillside and letting the hill spill over it. The areas of the house which open to the views have very deep overhangs and on the east side, we created a courtyard for children and a small dog to play safely. Practicality and respect for the local palate guided the material choices and the adventurous young spirit of our clients is reflected in an all-glass entry of burnt orange.
